The capital city of Lanzarote, Arrecife. There are some great things to visit or do in this busy port town.

Location

Arrecife lies on the coast south of Costa Teguise and north of Puerto del Carmen and the airport.

History

The city dates back to the fifteenth century, where records show it was a small fishing village. Over the following centuries the town grew and became rather prosperous as a trading post between the new worlds. Arrecife took over from the ancient town of Teguise as the capital in 1852. The name Arrecife refers to the black volcanic reefs which fishermen used as a harbour to keep their boats safe.

Beaches

Between the Arrecife Gran Hotel and Hotel Diamar, Playa Reducto is well protected and usually has calm waters. A short walk along the promenade away from Arrecife are Playa del Cable and Playa Flor.

Attractions

The Cultural Centre and bar Ell Almacen were created in 1974 by César Manrique, and quickly became a cultural centre for the Island.
