Playa Blanca
December 26, 2016Playa Blanca is a busy yet tranquil fishing town boasting some breathtaking scenery, coastline and clear water beaches.
Location
Playa Blanca is the tranquil resort on the southern coast of Lanzarote, around 33 kilometres from Arrecife Airport. The beaches of Punto Papagayo lie to the East, with Montaña Roja and the lighthouse toward the west. To the north is Timanfaya National Park, and the Janubio salt pans which show the traditional methods used to gather salt.
Booking.comHistory
Playa Blanca’s development into a resort has been fairly recent. Historically the town was a fishing village somewhat stranded at the bottom of the island. It was always a popular place for development though, as the port gives direct links to Fuerteventura.
Weather
The sun shines almost all year round in Playa Blanca. There is a slight breeze from the Atlantic, which has a wonderful cooling effect on hot days. At the start and end of the day there can be some amazing and breathtaking sunrise and sunset views. Watch for the sun rising over Papagayo, or setting over Montaña Roja.
Beaches
Playa Blanca’s 9 kilometres of coastline is effectively one large bay which is split up into three beaches. The geography means that the beaches in and around Playa Blanca are well sheltered and ideal for catching some sun or swimming.
Punto Papagayo is a short distance from the resort, and offers a network of golden sand beaches.
Attractions
Since 2016, Playa Blanca has been home to the Museo Atlántico – the only underwater sculpture museum in Europe.
It is well worth taking a walk along the promenade, which links all parts of the resort, as well as providing some spectacular views across the Bocaina Straits. There are boat trips available from Marina Rubicon, and while you’re there you could have a look at Castillo de las Coloradas.
Shopping
Playa Blanca itself has a wide selection of shops to keep you entertained, or you could check out some of the upmarket shops in Marina Rubicon.
Eating
Playa Blanca has a wide selection of restaurants, cafes, bars on the beach promenade, overlooking the central Playa Blanca beach. There are some amazing evening views to take in as you enjoy your food.
Being a fishing port, it’s a good place for seafood, and of course Spanish and Canarian dishes.
Night Life
Playa Blanca is slightly more sedate than other resorts such as Puerto Del Carmen and Costa Teguise. It’s still a good night out with many bars open until the early hours at the CC. Papagayo, Playa Dorada.
Transport
Playa Blanca is served by Linea 161 & 261 which usually call at Puerto del Carmen – Puerto Calero – Yaiza. Taxis are in abundance, as with any Canarian holiday resort.
It is a short ferry trip to hop between Playa Blanca and Corralejo, Fuerteventura.
